Sustainability, vibrant colour palettes, and spaces that bring the indoors out are some of the biggest patio trends of 2025.
After 26 years in the business, we’ve enjoyed seeing how outdoor spaces have transformed throughout the years. While a patio used to be a basic concept, the sky is now the limit! As more Aussies seek an outdoor lifestyle, we’re seeing patios that double as true extensions of the home.
Here is a look at the top 9 patio trends we are seeing and loving for this year!
9 of the Top 2025 Patio Trends in Australia
- Biophilic Design
- Patio as an Extension of the Home
- Fully Functional Outdoor Kitchens
- Sustainability
- Bold Colour Choices
- Softer Lines and Shapes
- Multifunctional Outdoor Spaces
- Integrated Smart Technology
- Minimalist Aesthetic
1. Biophilic Design
One of the fastest-growing patio trends we’re seeing is Biophilic design, the concept of incorporating nature into living areas. Biophilic design elements blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating an outdoor haven.
Think lush green energy, natural materials, and vertical gardens that make you feel connected to nature.
Here are some of our favourite biophilic design features:
- Living Walls: Green walls and vertical gardens add lushness and greenery while preserving floor space. Living walls are ideal for compact spaces, balconies, and any patio that needs a boost of greenery.
- Water Features: It’s hard to match the tranquility that flowing water provides. We’re seeing small-scale ponds, waterfalls, and fountains being added at an increased frequency. Water features create a spa-like atmosphere for the ultimate relaxing space.
- Natural Flooring: Natural stone will be huge in 2025, including limestone, concrete pavers, travertine, and sandstone flooring
2. Patios As An Extension of the Home
One of the biggest trends we’ve noticed is the desire for a patio that feels like an extension of the home. And we expect the bringing-the-indoors-out trend to continue gaining popularity in 2025.
The goal is a patio that allows homeowners to enjoy the comforts of the indoors while surrounded by the serenity of nature.
Certain design and decoration techniques blur the boundary between your home’s interior and your patio. Here are some of the popular ways to make your patio feel like an extension of your living room:
- Outdoor rugs
- Throw blankets
- Cosy cushions
- Plush outdoor furniture
- Decorative pillows
- Side tables
- Weather-resistant fabrics
One of our favourite examples of owners making a patio feel like an outdoor living room is this custom patio with insulated roof.
The owners were thrilled with how this space turned out, and so were we! For this build, the homeowners already had an alfresco area, complete with a fence for privacy and wind protection. But the area was fully exposed to the sun, making the area almost unusable on hot Perth afternoons.
Our solution was to add an insulated roof and a sophisticated design to make the space more versatile and usable.
One of the best parts of our job is seeing how owners finish a space. We love how the owners brought lush greenery to the space with a mix of potted and hanging plants.
They also added plush, comfy outdoor furniture, creating an alfresco area that is completely private, protected from the elements, and strikingly beautiful. The result is a true backyard oasis that begs to be enjoyed!
3. Fully Functional Outdoor Kitchens
Here’s another 2025 patio trend that focuses on bringing the indoors out: full-function outdoor kitchens.
Who wants to be stuck inside cooking on a gorgeous summer day? Not us Aussies! We’re seeing more and more homeowners opt for fully functional outdoor kitchens. Outdoor kitchens allow for more time outside and avoid heating up the house while cooking on hot days.
Simple outdoor kitchens featuring a grill and a dining table and chairs will still be popular. However, we’re seeing more fully functioning outdoor kitchens featuring:
- Designated dining space
- Built-in BBQs
- Sinks
- Cabinets
- Brick pizza ovens
- Fridges
- Countertop space for cooking
4. Sustainability
Expect a continued focus on sustainability in 2025 through eco-friendly materials and alternatives.
Along with being more eco-conscious, many of these sustainable measures result in less maintenance and reduced costs in the long term.
Sustainable patio features in 2025 include:
- Recycled Materials: Expect a continued preference for recycled timber, bamboo, and composite decking rather than traditional hardwoods.
- Reclaimed Materials: The use of reclaimed bricks, wood, metal, stones, and other materials will continue gaining popularity.
- Sustainable Landscaping: More homeowners are opting for sustainable landscaping techniques focused on native and drought-resistant plants. These techniques result in minimise water use and reduced maintenance.
- Lasting Quality: Cheap outdoor furniture that only lasts for one season is wasteful for the environment and your wallet. Expect an increase in higher quality outdoor furniture built to last rather than get thrown away frequently.
- Sustainable Furniture Choices: More homeowners are choosing sustainable outdoor pieces made from repurposed metals, recycled plastic, and responsibly sourced wood.
- Solar Power: Solar-powered outdoor lights provide function and ambiance while also being environmentally-friendly.

5. Bold Colour Choices
Neutral tones, such as grey and beige, will likely always have a place in outdoor design. But 2025 is seeing an increased shift toward more vibrant shades and bolder colour palettes.
Popular colours for patios in 2025 include:
- Ocean Hues: Our favourite colour trend for patios in 2025 is ocean blues. Aquas, teals, and deep blues all pay homage to our coastal landscape and bring tranquility to a patio space.
- Deep Greens: Forest and emerald greens bring a bold yet earthy and soothing vibe to outdoor spaces.
- Earthy, Rusty Reds: Bold, earthy reds create a warm, cosy, inviting space that invokes a Mediterranean feel.
- Burnt Oranges and Mustard Yellows: Mustad yellows and burnt orange shades add visual interest and personality to alfresco spaces.
6. Softer Lines and Shapes
2025 is saying goodbye to harsh shapes and embracing natural lines, organic shapes, and rounded furniture. We’re noticing rounded armchairs and sofas, dome and curved patios, and winding backyard paths.
The softer lines and natural curves lend a relaxed beauty to outdoor spaces. As the year continues, we expect to see a continued focus on fluid, soft shapes and designs that contribute to a retreat-like backyard.
7. Multifunctional Outdoor Spaces
Another growing patio trend we’re seeing in 2025 is the demand for multifunctional outdoor spaces. We’re seeing patios that focus on versatility, enabling multiple uses in the same space.
Homeowners want a patio that can be used for entertaining a large group one day and a cosy nook for reading the next. Multipurpose patios can be ideal for entertaining, lounging, dining, and hosting events.
Here are some of the creative techniques we’re seeing that make patios multi-purpose:
- Versatile Shade Solutions: One of the easiest ways to add versatility to a patio is with outdoor blinds. Custom outdoor blinds allow you to transform your patio’s purpose at a moment’snotice. Good weather? Open up the blinds to maximise airflow and let in natural light. Windy or misty day? Pull the blinds down for instant protection against the elements.
- Versatile Seating: Modular seating can easily be re-configured to adapt to different uses.
- Incorporated Storage Solutions: A custom patio can be beautiful and functional, and this project proves it. The primary focus of this build was a space for entertaining.
However, the owners also wanted to maximise their usable space by adding an integrated carport. The combined custom patio and carport is a versatile space that features invaluable storage and an area for entertaining and relaxing.
- Multi-Purpose Structures: Here’s one of our larger projects featuring a Gable Alfresco and a Skillion Poolside Patio. This backyard is the ultimate combination of function, comfort, and fun!
8. Integrated Smart Technology
There’s no denying that smart technology is a trend everywhere, including patios. As the line between indoors and outdoors continues to diminish, expect to see smart technology integrated through:
- Weather-resistant speakers for outdoor entertainment
- Smart irrigation through sensor-based watering systems that reduce water waste by automatically adjusting according to rainfall
- Weatherproof charging stations
- Automated lighting systems with motion sensors and app control
9. Minimalist Aesthetic
Yes, 2025 is seeing the inclusion of bold colours, but minimalism is still strong. A neutral backdrop with clean lines serves as an ideal way to highlight the contrast of bold colours.
The minimalist patio trend will focus on simplicity blended with elegance. Think clean lines, zero clutter, and a balanced, peaceful atmosphere.
A minimalist aesthetic creates a tranquil outdoor area that is perfect for unwinding and focusing on the beauty of your surroundings.
